Kinton is a small unincorporated settlement in Washington County, Oregon. It’s on the Tualatin River’s northern bank, at the crossroads of Oregon Route 210 and River Road, a significant county thoroughfare that leads northwest towards Hillsboro. Kinton is about 8 miles north of Newberg, 6 miles southwest of Beaverton, and 7 miles southeast of Hillsboro. Despite the fact that the ferry has long been replaced by a bridge, OR 210 is still known as Scholls Ferry Road. Kinton is located in Oregon’s wine valley, where there are numerous noteworthy wineries.
Kinton was named after Peter Kindt, a pioneer who established a donation land claim nearby. A few thousand years later, the Donation Land Claim Act of 1850, established by Congress to promote settlement in Oregon Territory, sparked a flood of immigrants to the new Territory along the Oregon Trail.
Before the Act lapsed in 1855, 7,437 patents were issued, one of which was to a Peter Kindt. Mr. Kindt’s Donation Land claim was located near the Tualatin River, and the town of Kinton was named for him. Kinton was lucky to be located near Peter Scholl’s 1848 ferry across the Thames. From 1894 to 1903, Kinton had its own post office. Today, Kinton has a Beaverton postal address.
Kinton is a tiny, close-knit village that has been avoided by traffic. A community center near the ancient schoolhouse serves the civic requirements of the town. A number of farmers operate tiny farm stalls where they sell the fruits of their labor. Scholls Ferry Road has lately been enlarged, at least in the neighborhood of the schoolhouse.
